TV Appearance WFAA-TV’s (Dallas - Fort Worth) ”Metro“2 women fill niche for non-allergenic jewelry 02/03/2003 By MARJORIE FORD / WFAA-TV For many fashionable women, earrings and a necklace are the finishing touches to an outfit. Career women Joan Childress and Monica Love thought so. The two friends enjoy wearing stylish jewelry, but both have allergies to certain metals. "The allergy would come and go with burning, itching, things like that, with certain jewelry," Childress explains. Childress and Love often ended up empty-handed in their search for chic, quality, non-allergenic earrings. "Before, I hadn't been able to find colorful earrings," Love says. "Just nickel-free just comes in like, silver, and that's it." Necessity is the mother of invention; so, the two engineering graduates took a crash-course in jewelry making. They began creating their own earrings. First, as a hobby. "I took them on a ski trip," Childress said, "and the people in the house, I showed it to them — the people we were staying with — and they liked them and they actually wanted to buy them." Childress and Love quickly turned their hobby into a business. In April 2001, Tre-Sis Handmade Jewelry was born. "Originally, there were three of us," Childress says. "We were coming up with a non-word on a recommendation of a friend who is a trademark attorney, that if you're going to do this nationwide and worldwide it's best to have a name that wouldn't easily be duplicated." And no two pieces of their jewelry are exactly alike. Love describes one of her favorites. "I think my favorite is the aqua — the green aquamarine. I really like that one,” she said. “It's unusual, because (when) most people think of aquamarine, they think of blue." Childress’ and Love's designs are made of high-quality metals, such as silver and gold, with a wide variety of beads and gemstones. Tre-Sis is an e-commerce business. Love, who is a software engineer, focuses on their Web site. While Childress, a former industrial engineer, handles marketing for their company full time. Both women have a hand in creating their jewelry. "First, we start by matching the stones and deciding which stones coordinate and what look we're after," Love said. "You have to lay it out and look at it and decide what looks better. You're just playing with beads, really." Playing with beads indeed. The two business partners have high hopes for their company. They want Tre-Sis jewelry in major department stores; and there's talk of franchising. For now, it's available on the Internet at www.tresisjewelry.com. © 2003 Belo Interactive Reprinted with permission
